This song cracks me up and hey, it's my birthday (for another 1.5 hours) so I might as well post something that is birthday-related, right?

Yuuuuuuup.

I'm another day older.

But not deeper in debt.

I owe many thanks to my wonderful friends who've sent birthday wishes today. [livejournal.com profile] arphalia, [livejournal.com profile] rev_ringtail, [livejournal.com profile] genet, [livejournal.com profile] chebutykin, [livejournal.com profile] asetwoman, [personal profile] lady_curmudgeon, [livejournal.com profile] takaza, [livejournal.com profile] linnaeus, [livejournal.com profile] rjbartrop, anybody else I might have missed -- you are all fantastic folks, and I'm blessed to have you in my life.

[livejournal.com profile] chebutykin: I'll get you not only for that birthday post (Dear lord, where did you find the "Press A!" video?) but also for starting the FunFerenFact trend on Twitter. I don't know how, but I will!

I'd like to extend my thanks to those who gave wishes in person, online, on LJ or whatever for my birthday yesterday - y'all are very kind, and make far too much out of this. Speaking of making far too much of things, [livejournal.com profile] lady_curmudgeon gave me balloons and three cards for my birthday and the cats gave me a card too. All told it's much more than I was anticipating.

In other news, I'm ready for this week to be over.

I know that it's silly since she shares a home with me, but I wanted to post and wish a very happy birthday to my [livejournal.com profile] lady_curmudgeon! This will just have to do until I get home.

[livejournal.com profile] lady_curmudgeon and I were invited to hang out at [livejournal.com profile] roho and [livejournal.com profile] genet's house last night, ostensibly to celebrate the birthday of [livejournal.com profile] linnaeus with a few close friends, some grilled meat products and some booze. It turned out to be an ambush -- well, at least for me it was. Not only did Genet have a cake to celebrate Linnaeus's birthday... but half of it was to celebrate my upcoming anniversary as well. When the usual song was sung my lady naturally had to add her own festive verses to it. I figured I'd put those lyrics behind me when I hit puberty... ;)

Damn sneaky dames.

Alas, due to weather the grilling was not to be had. We enjoyed some delivered pizza with our booze instead and caroused into the night. It was a good way to spend a Saturday evening, and I'd like to thank everyone who was there for making it such a pleasant (and booze-filled) night.

A long day at the office yesterday netted mixed results but I think we made some progress on one or two important issues. I achieved escape velocity from the office sometime around 1920 hours and made my way up to Kenosha, arriving something like an hour later. Even when I-294 is under construction I can still travel a great distance in reasonable time on it -- so long as I wait until after rush hour has finished.

I was hungry and the hour was late, so I convinced [livejournal.com profile] lady_curmudgeon to accompany me on a quick run for some fast food. When we returned from Burger King I handed her the drive-thru bag and asked her to carry it since there was a "heavier bag I forgot in the back of the truck." When I came around the front of the Expedition and she saw the huge bag with "Happy Birthday" written on it she just stared and said "Oh, my."

Before we had our late dinners she unwrapped her gifts. I think I surprised her with the vast range of items I'd managed to fit in there. Everything from ceramic painted cats (Think of the Chicago Cows On Parade art exhibit and you have the sense of how these cats were painted) to a wireless desktop to an iTunes gift card she can use to buy some new music. Perhaps the biggest surprise to Curmudgeon was the bag of Russel Stover sugarless chocolate truffles that I had put in there. She was sure she'd hate them simply on the merits of their being sugarless. None the less, I convinced her to try one and she spent the next five minutes boggling at how delicious it was. Do I know my lady, or what?

In other news this weekend will be spent in the usual way I spend my weekends in Kenosha: helping the Curmudgeon pack for her upcoming move to Z'ha'dum and maybe having dinner or coffee with some local friends -- assuming we don't get roped into putting some final finishing touches on the estate so Curmudgeon's brother can get it on the market. Of course no weekend of productivity like this is complete without a twist. This week's twist is that the last round of antibiotics given to Curmudgeon's primadonna cat (Aptly named "Diva") seem to have had no effect on what has now been diagnosed as a kidney infection. So a new round of meds are being applied and I'm the lucky cat daddy who gets to put them down her throat for the entirety of the weekend (as an amusing sidenote, I think 'mudge is envious because when pill time arrives Diva fights me less and I usually get the pill down her throat the first time, whereas for Curmudgeon there's lots of squirming, biting and several tries are necessary before the meds go down the hatch).

Good wishes of birthday cheer go to my [livejournal.com profile] lady_curmudgeon, for today she celebrates a circuit of the sun on this little mudball we call home.

Happy birthday, sweets.

Today was my 28th birthday. Being that it had been such a quiet, easy going day... I did something impulsive before going out to dinner with [livejournal.com profile] lady_curmudgeon, [livejournal.com profile] roho and [livejournal.com profile] genet.

Click to see what the idiot did this time. )

It was pretty easy. Got the beard trimmer, took the adjustable guard off and went to town like that scene in Full Metal Jacket. I had some second thoughts after the first pass, but by then I was committed so I just finished the job. I think it turned out nice! If people want I'll be sure to report back the reaction I get at work tomorrow.

BTW -- dinner was delicious and the company delightful. [livejournal.com profile] lady_curmudgeon even surprised me by giving me a big gift bag overflowing with little trinkets and fun gifts and mushy cards for my birthday. She knows better but I guess I wasn't going to stop her... and it was very sweet, regardless.

I'm not a lonely man

Many happy birthday wishes go out to [livejournal.com profile] genet!

Congratulations, hon -- you're another day older, just like the rest of us. ;) Just keep an eye on your e-mail for word about your birthday present, okay?
feren: I AM THE MAN (Feren-2003)
[livejournal.com profile] wolfbrotherjoe paged me with: Happy Birthday! Or at least, it was four minutes ago.
I answered, "Thanks. It's much appreciated."
To which he replied (without missing a heartbeat): No problem. So, that's one year closer to being able to justify that hair of yours.

It's true! If I were (more) wicked old I'd be able to justify this hair. ;)

... so I should blame somebody else for my being another year older, I suppose. My mother seems like the most likely culprit, but I think my father probably had some minor involvement in this, too.

I would like to thank everyone who wished me a happy birthday here on LJ, online, in person or through other means. It was all most unexpected! So there you have it... thank you, all.

As birthdays go, this one was very tame (especially compared to birthdays past). My sleep cycle is still all cracked out because of this week's series of overnight shifts, so I didn't get to bed near as early as I would have liked this morning. When I finally did get to bed, I didn't sleep all that well because my body was firmly of the opinion that I should not be asleep, and that I should be in the Blue Room of Death, sitting on a conference call and idly running various IOS commands against a site's router. I finally dragged myself out of bed around ten in the morning because Ra wasn't about to let me get a full 8 hours of sleep. I fed him, checked into some things online and then took a look out my window -- rain! Sweet, glorious rain. I had planned to do some light garden work on the decorative shrubs outside the front door, but the rain that was steadily falling put the kibosh on that idea. Electric hedge trimmers don't mix well with water and applying insect repellent isn't worth the effort if it's going to be washed off before it has a chance to take hold. With gardening plans taken out of the picture I opted for the lazy path and crashed on the couch in the den to watch some television.

At 12:45 this afternoon I decided to brave the rain to go visit my friends Heather and Garry. When I arrived at their house I was treated to a warm welcome and then had birthday drinks shoved in my hands, with admonishment that I wouldn't be allowed to leave until they were finished. Who am I to argue such hospitality? We spent the rest of the afternoon relaxing in their living room, playing with the dog, sipping Jim & Coke (since that was the drink they had designated to be my Birthday Beverage) and watching television. Conversation bounced around over a few different topics, including one of Garry's recent misadventures, Heather's trouble with technically inept coworkers and mutual frustration that the NASCAR race we were trying to watch had run its first seventeen laps under caution due to rainy weather at the track. I also was treated to a quick ride in Heather's oh-so-pretty new truck. It's a monster, but I think she'll like it better than her old one.

At 5:30 I bid Heather and Garry a good night, then excused myself before their big group of company could arrive. I probably would have stayed under other circumstances, but today I didn't really feel like sitting through a Fantasy Football draft with a bunch of folks I didn't know. On the drive home I grabbed a bit of KFC, then returned to the house to settle back on the couch and be lazy a while longer. Happily, my DVR had recorded "The Mummy," so I had a fun movie to watch as I ate dinner. After that, I got online... where, just now, [livejournal.com profile] harlee_one and [livejournal.com profile] tarinfirepelt have sprung a surprise on me. Ooooh, the two of you working in collaboration is a dangerous thing! But it's a wonderful gift. Thank you!

So there you have it...today had a lot of laziness, a little bit of company, some rain, a little bit of celebratory drinking, a few warm wishes and a surprise gift. I think that, while quiet, it has been quite a nice birthday. With luck the rest of my weekend will go just as nicely.
