It's 2:30 AM and the only thing playing is my tinnitus. This channel sucks, are you sure there isn't anything else on?

In other news: thanks for the irreversible hearing damage, dad.

Last night I didn't have nostalgic dreams -- mostly because I didn't sleep well at all. What sleep I did happen to get was mostly punctuated by unsettling or nightmare-esque visions. Thankfully there were very few of those, because I spent most of my evening just tossing and turning. In point of fact, I think I turned over more times than a hot dog on a 7-11 roller grill.

And before you ask: yes, I posted this entry with the sole purpose of sharing that terrible joke.

Last night [ profile] lady_curmudgeon and I went to the store to get some supplies so we could bake up a batch of the 'mudgeon's delicious chocolate chip cookie bars. While I was in the pharmacy getting a new bottle of Naproxen for my poor, poor wrists (Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a bitch, my friends) I also acted on the advice of a friend and picked up some Valerian capsules to try. I was hoping that I might get a better night's sleep thanks to one of these little pills and last night was the first night I got a chance to try something that apparently works quite well for most people out there in the world.

They didn't help me at all. Like most of my nights this one was full of the standard routine: Toss. Turn. Awaken, get up, pace, go back to bed. Repeat.

I'm mildly disappointed but not entirely surprised -- I've been dealing with an entirely broken sleep pattern for the last few years and my past experiences with over-the-counter medication have all turned in results that were far from satisfactory. However, one night does not by any means represent a perfect trial so I'm going to keep taking the pills as directed (1 capsule, 30 minutes before bed, with a glass of water) for the next week. Hopefully something will change and I'll get a decent, uninterrupted night's sleep. I don't really believe that I am going to achieve anything remotely close to that goal, but hey... what have I got to lose beside the $11 I paid for the bottle of capsules?

In other news, I found something that [ profile] yakko and [ profile] ottr will probably enjoy -- if they can deal with the horribly cliche music. Via our friends at BoingBoing we are given a link to an anti-Sony song from folks who have been betrayed by their PS3. Further evidence that the only real console battle here is between the Wii and the Xbox 360. I didn't plan to give them any more of my money anyway (not after they diligently tried to root-kit my PC because I made the mistake of wanting to play one of their audio CDs) but it's interesting to see how the reasons to ignore their new console continue to pile up and a greater backlash builds in response.

In news unrelated to sleep and consoles: the 'mudgeon and I will, later this evening, be complete fools and brave the elements of the storm to attend a birthday party for [ profile] markvd. Several coworkers of mine should be there and we will undoubtedly drink and commiserate and harass the birthday boy well into the evening hours.

Those of you who have known me for a while are aware that I am prone to "bad" dreams or flat-out nightmares. Over the last two years it has become a regular occurance for me to startle awake at some ridiculously early hour in the morning, often by flailing or jerking upright. This usually leads to me slamming my skull into the bookshelf that is built into my headboard, which has already left one scar and will probably lead to more if I don't put in a more "traditional" headboard soon.

Sometimes these rude awakenings happen two or even three times over the course of a night. For the majority of these terrors, I have no idea what causes them or serves as fuel for them. Am I too stressed out? Am I worried about someone or something? Do I have too much caffeine in my diet? Is Ra sleeping on my face? I really don't know It could be any one of those things, a combination thereof, or something totally different.

The set of nightmares I woke up from today at 3:48 were particularly vivid and (for personal reasons) unsettling, but at least I have an explanation for them: there is little doubt that watching the high-definition, widescreen 2003 remake of the 1974 horror cult classic, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre did not help things even one iota.

Why am I getting woken up for a ticket on this issue? The last five times it broke it wasn't the firewall. It's broken, again, in the exact same way as the last time it wasn't the firewall.

Ergo it must be the firewall that's at fault this time, so they call and wake me up.

Bastard idiot tard-chops.

After more than a decade of service, my Sony "Dream Machine" clock-radio has finally ceased to function. I suppose everyone will think I'm a lunatic for saying this, but this makes me feel rather sad. Part of that is sentimental, as the alarm clock was a gift from my father a long time ago. That clock saw me through high-school, my first job and four separate moves. Part of it is a little less sentimental and a bit more anal-retentive: it's been a part of my morning routine ever since I received it. In any case it had been a fathful companion for over ten years, and now it's gone.

This also leaves me in a lurch for how I'm going to get up tomorrow. Due to the weather I need to get up at 5:30 to make sure I have a lot of time for the drive in to work... but I have no way to wake myself up (My body's "internal alarm clock" got reset from 5:45 AM to 8:15 AM during vacation). I guess I'll pull down an application for my PC and use it along with my speakers to act as a makeshift alarm until I can buy a suitable replacement.
