You all know this song, so here's the abridged version. Fourteen hour work day, 6 hours of it in an outage response meeting that was filled with finger pointing, hand waving, wild accusations, straw-grasping and no resolution. Crappy drive home with malfunctioning truck (throwing four diagnostic codes now, how exciting) in even worse weather did wonders for my tension -- it's always more interesting if you don't actually know you're going to get home. Hour of shoveling driveway, collapse into bed at some hour of the morning after midnight. Got three hours of sleep because e-mail kept waking me up (needed to check them and be ready for a phone call due to the outage).

Climb out of bed ass-early, shovel, take out the garbage and start the new day on a wonderful drive into the office.

However, to keep things in perspective, I quote Ozzy: It could be worse. I could be Sting.

I did the fourteen-hour workday, always-on-call thing during the dot-com boom. When I was laid off (I should have quit first) I decided I wasn't going to do that again. I didn't leave before I was laid off because I tend to get comfortable in ruts, no matter how uncomfortable the ruts themselves become.

I haven't worked more than eight hours a day, five days a week since then and I didn't have to take a pay cut to do it. I don't have a ton of responsibility, but unless it's my own company, I don't want responsibility.

I guess that _did_ sound kinda like a scam pitch. :D Unfortunately I don't have any brochures other than this old Church of the SubGenius leaflet.

My current job's not perfect-- it's shift work and not very challenging, but I get along great with my co-workers, there's a lot of time to goof off and BS with them, I get to leave after being there for eight hours, and I'm not on call.
