It's a funny video to watch and it's readily apparent that the cat is not being hurt and is, in fact, enjoying the attention quite a great deal -- watch her do her nub-sharpening routine on his knee whenever he stops. It's adorable! What's less adorable is that, after trying this out on lady_curmudgeon's cat (Jazz, the oldest of the pair) I found that the cat in the video is not the only one who enjoys this sort of attention. Now I can't have my lap to myself! Whenever I sit down Jazz jumps in my lap and demands spankings.

Her fur is so puffery that it's absorbing most of the impact like a down pillow!

I actually pat Fang pretty firmly during petting at times, like you would thump your palm on the side of a dog to show affection. He seems to accept it.

Yep, my folks have several cats that love that sort of attention, often the harder the better (up to a point, of course)-- at least as hard as the guy in the video. Go figure!

My guess is that the larger (and the hairier) breeds would appreciate it more. Probably helps with circulation.

I don't think I could get away with that with my last cat, but she was about 8 pounds at her heaviest, and she didn't like laps.

She also packed heat, and wouldn't pause to cap your ass.

This is the second video I've seen of someone doing that to a cat. I think someone else posted the first one to cat_lovers. At first, I thought it was just one weird cat that so happens to like that, but now that you mentioned that lady_curmudgeon's cat likes that, I've got to wonder. Hmm...maybe a lot of cats like them because they're similar to our back massages? They increase blood flow or something.

On an unrelated note, cosettemonster likes back rubs, probably because she's got some arthritis in her hips and back. Once, I used the back massager, and she didn't run away from it. In fact, she loved it...she practically soaked that damn thing up... :)
