I ordered this a little while ago, and have been playing with it for about the last week and change. I'm pretty in love with this little gadget. Maybe if I'm properly motivated (read: looking for something to procrastinate with) this weekend I'll write up a little review on it. For now, though, I'm just amused that I can use AOL Instant Messanger off my phone and not have it be an experience in pain.

Oooh, shiny...

I've been wanting one of those, and I've been about to order one about three times. The messagey and pda-ish stuff looks great. But how well does the phone-ness work?

It is *GREAT*.

We hate Feren for bringing this device into our home, because neither of us can afford to get one right now.

EVERYTHING about this thing is so damned cool.

Kitty want!!!! ;)

The phone aspect of it is pretty good, in my opinion. It's a tiny bit awkward to hold in your hand for extended periods of time, but that may just be my bias towards tiny little phones like the StarTAC showing through. The good news is that they provide an earbud / microphone combo like most other phones out there these days. I've spent over an hour on this phone so far with my parents, and they say it sounds just fine.

The PDA-ish stuff is a bit limited: for example I depend heavily upon my Handspring Visor for a program called "Yet Another Password Program," to keep track of all my logins on websites, servers, routers, etc. I can't really do that with my Sidekick. Outside of that the Address/Phone book is simple and intuitive, the AIM system kicks butt, the keyboard is small but easy to use. All told I think it's a winner of a product, and I'm eager to see what upgrades they'll come up with over the next few months.

Seems like the past dozen times you've chatted on AOL IM with me from it you've had nothing but praise for it, save for the battery life.

I'm posting this reply with it. And I can send text messages directly to your cell phone with it, too. Which I have already done. *smirk*

Yes, I remember that.

My Nextel phone can only recieve text messages, it can't send them.

The only drawback to the sidekick is that the deal they have running right now (free data transfer for a year) only lasts til the end of this month.

You can purchase one on Amazon and get rebates out the ass- I think it brings it down to $50 for new service customers. (May be $100, not sure)

The phone normally runs $250, so if you can afford it and want one, now's the time.

The actual voice service on it is just as good as the other T-Mobile phones (which is pretty damned good in our living room.. Fer will have to report on how well it does elsewhere), and well.. I can't really report on the rest because I was too busy tootling around with AIM for the few minutes he let it out of his grasp. :)

It's a really neato nifty gadget. :)

So, did you get rid of the Startac, or did you just get a new toy and keep the other phone?

I'm keeping the StarTAC as well as my Handspring Visor for a while. I'm still settling into the habit of using this, and since it is on the GSM network it doesn't have quite the coverage that the StarTAC has.
