I just finished watching Philadelphia, a movie based on a true story regarding a lawyer unfairly dismissed from his firm after it is discovered he is gay and has contracted HIV. This movie won several awards, and it deserved them. My god, is it powerful.

I was going to write something tonight along the lines of a rant, since when I got home I was in a terrible mood. I was thinking maybe a rant on the slow death of our language at the hands of marketing droids, or something along those lines, but I think I'll let it wait. After seeing this I just want to curl up on my bed with the lights off and some quiet music playing, and think about life, my friends, my family; I'd like to just muse on things for a while before I go to bed.

Seems like I should be getting somewhere

That movie was awesome. I'd really like to see it again. See, the first (and only) time I saw it was at Preacher's not-girlfriend's, while he was there. But he was sleep on the chair, so I had to keep peeking over to make sure he wasn't awake to catch the drift of the thing and ream me. Neil Young music was just one of those added benefits. ;)

I'm sure you'll feel up to ranting some other time. ;)

Yup, Philadelphia's a damn good movie. I own a copy myself, watched it a few times. Very moving.

Oh, yeah. My high school class watched Philadelphia (in Geometry class, junior year, no less). Loved it. (Tom Hanks and Antonio Banderas-- I don't know why that 'works,' but it sure does. Meaning no disrespect to the subject matter, of course.)

That was only a few months or so after I'd self-identified gay myself, so it was definitely powerful. And sad. And unnerving. One of the better 'serious' movies I've seen.

I can't watch that movie without crying. Not just in the theatre -- I get hit in the throat by things easily in the theatre -- but every time I've seen it on video or on TV. The fact that Philly's 45 minutes away and has been a part of my world for as long as I can remember adds to it for me, too, because in addition to this subject material which in itself is incredibly emotional, so many of the locations are familiar that it gets really tearing.

*sigh*
