I woke up this morning at about 5:10 AM, hidden under all my blankets with Ra and shivering. I was curled up around the giant black panther that usually sits at the head of my bed (a gift from [livejournal.com profile] points and [livejournal.com profile] aynjel some number of months ago) as if I was seeking warmth and comfort from that. I don't think it was doing much in the way of radiating heat since it is decidedly inanimate, but it was somewhat comforting none the less. Ra, the little traitor, was hiding in the crook of my legs with his tail laid over his nose, dozing blissfully away. At least the backs of my knees were warm.

I couldn't force myself to go back to sleep so I decided I would get up and take a shower instead. I live in the 21st century, after all, so I might as well use the benefits of modern living (also known as the water heater) to warm my spirits as well as my body. I basked in a steamy shower for a good twenty minutes, then got out of the tub and attended to my usual morning routine of grooming and oral hygeine. I'd forgotten just how hot I had been running the shower, though ... when I got out both mirrors were completely fogged up. I tried to wipe them down once or twice but met with minimal success, so I had to do some zen shaving to get my beard properly shaped for the week ahead. Tonight I'll have to trim it, things are getting a little unruly.

Naturally since I got up about 45 minutes earlier than usual I am left with some time to burn. I checked my e-mail and then caught up on LiveJournal. Right now I'm taking a look at (a href="http://www.wunderground.com/">Weather Underground, and after I punched in my zip code I was unsurprised to find that we're currently at 41 °F (5 °C for those of you who believe in a logical temperatire scale). I knew it was getting colder every morning, on my drive in to class on Friday the radio hosts kept repeating that it was 45 degrees at O'hare as well as at Midway airport... but I didn't expect that it had gotten that cold already.

What I want to know right now is who stole the sun? Even as late as a month ago there would have been great amounts of daylight streaming through my window and into my bedroom by this time in the morning... I usually would wake up to the sound of birds chirping and geese honking well before my alarm would go off. Now, though... it's 6:17 and as I look out the window into the parking lot I see only darkness with the occasional car's countour highlighted by one of the parking lot's lights. Undoubtedly this is why I have such a hard time waking up during the winter, I find the darkness in the early hours of the morning oppressive. When winter is in full swing I get up before the sun rises, drive to work and spend my entire day in the office. When I get out of the office at 4:00 PM it's already dusk, and by 4:15 or 4:30 it's dark again. This pattern repeats itself all week, from Monday to Friday, and when I get home Friday evening I'm left feeling in some way cheated... as if I was never given my opportunity to see the sun during the week.

The clock now reads 6:26, so I had best gather my coat and keys. I'm not looking forward to the Monday morning commute, but at least I have the good fortune of knowing that the Eastbound side of I-290 is now completely open. The construction continues, but the impact on my drive in to the office is at least impacted a little less these days.

Of course the herd looks perfect

Monday morning....

Mmmm, hot shower. What I would do to get one now in the mornings. (could stop leaving the window open in the first place)

You should get back the sun in the mornings, at least for a few more weeks, when Daylight Savings Time ends and we 'fall back' one hour. Of course that makes the day end all that much sooner.. and by December you'll be up both before the sun and out adter it sets, no wonder winter is so depressing.

Daylight Savings Time is the tool of Satan. It should be abolished, and the people who continue to inflict it upon the world drug out into the street and shot.

Perish the thought!!!!

Daylight savings is gods gift to field testers. When the sun goes down at 4:30 you can at least get home at a decent hour unlike those 7 am to 9 pm days in mid summer. (Whatcha mean ya wanna go home? There still 2 hours a daylight!!)

Although I do agree. Getting up before dawn, and getting home at sundown bites balls. Just like my other wonderful pridicament. I only get my weekends off when it rains. Eli and Kaylo are always Joking. Its raining! Koz should be calling us to drive through it to visit! =)

Nifty trick: apply a (very thin) layer of shaving cream to the mirror when it's fogged up, and wipe it off with a towel. No more fogged mirror! It even lasts for a day or two, too.

Mmmm, fifty degrees here, not a cloud in the sky. High of maybe 68. It's about damn time we saw some signs of fall down here!

Does this have to be the Gillette gel-that-you-turn-into-lather-yourself shaving cream, or can I use the supercheap pre-lathered stuff, like Barbasol?

Either will work. The key is to just establish a very thin layer of soap on the glass. Come to think of it, the cheap stuff probably is easier to use for this since it won't clump up like the gel would.

Sucks: Having to get up while it is still dark, to get to work. Or even getting into work before dawn.

Worse: Also leaving work in the dark after dusk, and having that happen all week.

Even worse: Working underground and not seeing any evidence of the sun for 4 months out of the year.

I steadfastly maintain that changing clocks by pushing them ahead and backwards by an hour at random points throughout the year is part of a plot to push us all into a psychotic episode.

Especially if you have to design international software that knows how to handle the time shifts properly.
