feren: I AM THE MAN (ashryn-bester)

... so I should blame somebody else for my being another year older, I suppose. My mother seems like the most likely culprit, but I think my father probably had some minor involvement in this, too.

I would like to thank everyone who wished me a happy birthday here on LJ, online, in person or through other means. It was all most unexpected! So there you have it... thank you, all.

As birthdays go, this one was very tame (especially compared to birthdays past). My sleep cycle is still all cracked out because of this week's series of overnight shifts, so I didn't get to bed near as early as I would have liked this morning. When I finally did get to bed, I didn't sleep all that well because my body was firmly of the opinion that I should not be asleep, and that I should be in the Blue Room of Death, sitting on a conference call and idly running various IOS commands against a site's router. I finally dragged myself out of bed around ten in the morning because Ra wasn't about to let me get a full 8 hours of sleep. I fed him, checked into some things online and then took a look out my window -- rain! Sweet, glorious rain. I had planned to do some light garden work on the decorative shrubs outside the front door, but the rain that was steadily falling put the kibosh on that idea. Electric hedge trimmers don't mix well with water and applying insect repellent isn't worth the effort if it's going to be washed off before it has a chance to take hold. With gardening plans taken out of the picture I opted for the lazy path and crashed on the couch in the den to watch some television.

At 12:45 this afternoon I decided to brave the rain to go visit my friends Heather and Garry. When I arrived at their house I was treated to a warm welcome and then had birthday drinks shoved in my hands, with admonishment that I wouldn't be allowed to leave until they were finished. Who am I to argue such hospitality? We spent the rest of the afternoon relaxing in their living room, playing with the dog, sipping Jim & Coke (since that was the drink they had designated to be my Birthday Beverage) and watching television. Conversation bounced around over a few different topics, including one of Garry's recent misadventures, Heather's trouble with technically inept coworkers and mutual frustration that the NASCAR race we were trying to watch had run its first seventeen laps under caution due to rainy weather at the track. I also was treated to a quick ride in Heather's oh-so-pretty new truck. It's a monster, but I think she'll like it better than her old one.

At 5:30 I bid Heather and Garry a good night, then excused myself before their big group of company could arrive. I probably would have stayed under other circumstances, but today I didn't really feel like sitting through a Fantasy Football draft with a bunch of folks I didn't know. On the drive home I grabbed a bit of KFC, then returned to the house to settle back on the couch and be lazy a while longer. Happily, my DVR had recorded "The Mummy," so I had a fun movie to watch as I ate dinner. After that, I got online... where, just now, [livejournal.com profile] harlee_one and [livejournal.com profile] tarinfirepelt have sprung a surprise on me. Ooooh, the two of you working in collaboration is a dangerous thing! But it's a wonderful gift. Thank you!

So there you have it...today had a lot of laziness, a little bit of company, some rain, a little bit of celebratory drinking, a few warm wishes and a surprise gift. I think that, while quiet, it has been quite a nice birthday. With luck the rest of my weekend will go just as nicely.

Another day older
