In lieu of an actual update about anything that's going on in my life, I will herein offer some free advice. My advice to anybody who is considering becoming an afficianado of home theater is this: Don't. Just don't do it. Run. Run now. Run screaming.

Trust me, you'll be much happier if you do yourself a favor and pick up a cheaper, less addictive habit. Something like crack cocaine, maybe.

The beautiful people

Gee, someone should've given said advice to my stepfather, though he's really more of an audiophile.

There's no escape...

I came to this conclusion years and years ago. The problem is, though, that any hobby is a moneysink. Home Theater/Audiophile, photography, painting, anything collectable...Anything that you want to devote time and energy to by way of a "relaxing" hobby equals heaps of cash. Huh. Maybe that's the hobbyist's formula: H = ((t+e)M)

They call it the bleeding edge for a reason - because you always get CUT CUT CUT.

Is it too late to just roll back and reinvest in a pro logic reciever with a 19 inch Goldstar TV from WalMart?

Well, yeah. I always thought that's the purpose of such critters.

But I guarantee that you'll spend less in your home theatre hobby than an average Warhammer 40K gamer.

If that makes you feel any better. :)

All I have to say is "Eight years of BattleTech."

It's not so much that I'm getting cut by the technology itself (though some of that HAS happened at this point), it's more having started spending money on this there seems to be no stopping at all.

The whole reason for this post was that I had just spent over $90 on a new power strip to handle all my gear. A fucking power strip, Neu. $10 at your local Wal-Mart for a 12-outlet model, and I've spent nearly ten times that.

Damn that's pretty. Excuse me, I have to go wipe the... drool... up now.

BattleTech is the entry level. Like pot to 40K's crystal-meth-cut-with-crack-and-caffiene-and-stuffed-in-an-unfiltered-Lucky-Strike.

I haven't done it (I'm not a big fan of strategic games), but I've seen it take several friends. Driving thousands of miles in a minivan filled with armies that have twice the cost of the minivan invested in them...

And that makes me sad.

But, hey, it's not like I haven't dumped a couple of grand in silly things before. :)

An anachronistic montage of a modern Pelikan M1000, a vintage Pelikan 100N, a Walther AC41 P-38, and a '60s era German uniform for the backdrop. Only the P-38 and the 100N are from roughly the same era--but the Walther was stored in Russia for several decades, so you get bonus points for the Soviet tie-in there. :)

BattleTech is indeed mere entry level, and much like the difference between your local pot dealer and the crack hustler on the corner of 59th and MLK, Games Workshop will fuck you up with a screwdriver if you don't play by their rules. FASA never ganked buyers or distributors the way GW will.

Of course, FASA no longer exists, so there you go.

That is insanity.

When my parents rewired the basement, they had the forsight to put my own room on its own breaker. We figured out which walls all my equipment would go on and put three dual-outlet sockets up in each area.

I miss that here. I really do.
