New toys on the horizon...

Thanks to tugrik and a host of other people I know (I'm looking at you, Zephyr... as well as you, mindslide) I have finally cracked under pressure like the little technophile I am. Tonight I ordered two beautiful things that are encased in black:

Yep, I've officially joined the Cult of Apple. Or, perhaps it's more accurate to say I'm returning to my roots... after all, I did get started in the world of computers "back in the day" with an Apple ][e. Either way, I'm glad to be working for $employer at the moment because I got an excellent educational discount on both the iPod and the MacBook. That's a 60GB iPod in black that I ordered, along with the new 13.3" widescreen MacBook with the 2.0GHz Intel Duo chip, also encased in ebony. I'm looking forward to doing some lightweight video editing with the MB and toting my MP3s with me in the truck instead of having to burn albums to CD for the truck's CD changer.

So now I get to wait impatiently for each box to show up. Looks like the iPod will be here first, with the MacBook following shortly after. At least I had them shipped to the office so they wouldn't sit around on my front porch for any monkey to find and steal...

Bought the 60Gb black iPod last November. Don't regret a moment! Buy a screen protector or a well padded case for it as the one included is a joke.

The MB will be mine probably by January. Justifiable business expense. :)

How well does darwinports support Intel? Is it as good as Fink package-wise? Fink have warned me that the Intel portion of their software is a bit half-baked. It's a shame, too; I have a brand-new Mac mini which could use it.

Darwinports builds from sources, so it handles Intel just fine. I think they're working on a binary distribution as well.

The -s flag on the port command forces Darwinports to use sources.

The Intel-based Macs are pretty fast, so a source build doesn't take as long as it did on PPC Macs using Fink.

I used to use Fink, but when I started doing some early Intel projects for work, I ended up changing over to Darwinports.

Dead-easy if you use a mini-ITX board. The ][e's case is a freaking cavern. One could even modify the disk][ external cases to house things like the CD/DVD drive, a couple of hard drives, etc...

Getting the attached keyboard to work on the PC is probably a bit of work, though. I'd just leave the internal keyboard for decoration and use a regular keyboard, though I did modify a platinum IIe case for mycroftb to make power (the Return key or spacebar, I forget which), reset (Ctrl-RESET) and hard drive activity (the power light) available from the attached keyboard.

I bought the black iPod back in December. I have mostly videos on it, and it worked great on the trips I took it on. You definitely will want to Rip Different for all your quirky DVD and video transcoding needs.

I've been using an iPod to listen to music in the car for the past few years. I use my iPod mini for that.

When my PowerBook G4 becomes useless, I'm planning on picking up a MacBook. They'll be a few revisions along by the time that happens, so I don't have to play the "Revision A" dance.

When you use the iPod in the truck, will you be using an FM transmitter, or will you be somehow hardwiring the iPod to the stereo?

I've been using a little FM wireless transmitter hooked to my computer, so I can play tunes from Rhapsody out in the yard. Works pretty well.
