The sad fact is that time is finite. We'll never have the time to do all the things we would like to someone, say all the things we would like to say, or hear all we would like to hear. We will always feel a loss, and will always have those "if only I had had more time" feelings.
We do the best we can, with who we are and what we've got. I think about this a lot as my dad ages too. A few weeks ago I recorded some morning conversations between he and I, just so at some point down the road I don't forget what he sounded like.

Shine down to let us know they are happy"
Look up in the sky at night, honey, and say hello to Shep. When the stars twinkle, that means he's saying hi right back...
As long as you have loving memories of him, you don't have to say goodbye. He'll remain alive and well in your heart.
((((big big big hugs))))

My thoughts are with you, fellow finite human.
