I use a mac, so I usually have iChat's jabber client running.

I used iChat for the first 9 months that I owned my MacBook and it served me quite admirably. If I hadn't gotten pulled in by Adium I would still be (happily) using iChat.

GoogleTalk is by far the most stealthy.

I still use Trillian for my IM needs, as seldom as I IM anymore. It doesn't give my computer any problems and I have no problems booting it up. As for IM network, I have no real preference because it all works the same for me. I don't use MSN too often because I don't know many people on MSN. Most of my list is either AIM or ICQ.

Yahoo through people's actual client and my GAIM client actually works well. MSN craps out or goes at a snail's pace. Not that that should be surprising or anything.

I have no idea how that was spit out. I guess I had it written in my mind. What I meant was Yahoo because file transfers going through them from my GAIM client actually work and don't slow down to a halt like MSN does.

I'm lazy and can't be bothered to look for new chat options, especially since I don't much use the one I have anyway.

To be fair, I used to use ICQ a while back, and AIM replaced it when it seemed that the three people I ICQed had all switched.

The use of SSL for my 2 Jabber-based instances is great. Using a non-crap client, as you know, is a must when dealing with Jabber. All you folks with Macs out there should simply switch to Adium if you deal with multiple services (and especially if you deal with multiple Jabber accounts).

I use AIM just because most of my friends also have AIM accounts. I sincerely wish for Google Talk to displace AIM.

Well, I use Trillian for my front end, because I don't care about what IM client I use. Well, except Yahoo, but that's because I hate Yahoo with the burning hate of a million suns.

Heck, as scary as it sounds (and as 'active' as I am, hiding out in my own private room), my busiest chatting is done on a MUCK.

Yes, Feren. That muck. And, yes, I'm that pathetic. :)

I use GAIM, so I don't really have a particular favorite protocol - they're all pretty much the same. I used to use Trillian (even paid for an earlier version), but they don't seem to keep with protocol changes, and the interface didn't appeal to me personally. I just added LJ Talk to GAIM, and it seems transparent enough.

I [heart] Gaim. I use Gaim in Linux and Windows, and when on the Mac, I use Adium, which uses the Gaim library.

When I'm in an environment where I can't install a client of my own, I use Meebo.com, an flash bowser-based multiclient.

Meebo (which I had never seen before you mentioned it here) is proof that Flash, like PERL before it, is being used to do things that language was never intended to do. And that's kinda cool!

While I occassionally use MSN (mostly when my boyfriend wants to talk to me but doesn't want to be swamped by people who only know his AIM name), I loathe it and will very rarely log onto it unless he explicitly asks me. ICQ was my favorite back in the day, but nowadays I know about one person who uses it, and it tends to be flaky on his end. So it kind of defaults to AIM out of habit.

(I also don't use the official client for either of these, but use Trillian, which I still think was better in the older version before they went payware.)

GTalk: Lack of ads, lack of system resources being sucked up. (hate hate hate AIM)

I use Gaim, connect to AIM, Yahoo, ICQ, LJ Talk, and my own home-Jabber server.

I like Jabber best because of the openness of the protocol, and the things beyond just typical IM that can be done with it (like the pre-populated lists of the LJ Talk server). I'm aiming on getting a version of a Jabber server written to link to the IFPL that will pre-populate your list with those people who live nearby in your surrounding area.

I use AIM (using mostly gaim as a client) because, well, that's what I use, and changing would be annoying.

lazyweb indeed.

Yeah, sheer laziness for AIM to me, as well. I think I technically have gtalk, but I find it to be a pain in the ass and so don't bother.

I prefer AIM and Yahoo because they work on my Sidekick. ICQ works on AIM clients, but do you want to IM to Rustitobuck or 54363002?

Would you remember me as 54363002?

I thought not.

Frankly, aside from now occasional use of muck-clients, I avoid IM like the plague. World of Warcraft eats up enough of my Internet time!

I use GAIM, because I like the multiple-client interface. Easy to keep track of all incoming conversations, easy to check logs regardless of client,All IM service conversations are logged, too. One central place for settings.

It's just easy. :)

Thus, I really have absolutely no preference as to what service I use any longer.

One of the other reasons why I like Google Talk

Is that the conversations are logged in my Gmail account. This makes it easy to refer to past conversations, especially when I'm using it from both home and work.

I also use two different private Jabber networks. And I have no favorites, I hate them all. I kind of agree with Boo. The MUCK remains my favorite. ;)

Ah, yes. Equal opportunity hatred ("these all suck, but which one sucks the least for my given need?") is the best approach. This poll would have been more entertaining if I had written it from that perspective.
