Halfway through the drive (205 miles) and I'm pulled over by an Indiana trooper for going 11 mph over the speed limit.

Oy, let's see how much this costs me.

Edit: cited me for 78 in a 70 mph zone becausew that's what my cruise control was set at. Total damage: $136. Are you fricking kidding me? You're citing me for 8 mph over, really?

Yeah, I'll contest this.

Yeah, I kept the exchange to the minimum, except for telling him my cruise was set for 78 when he told me he clocked me at 81.

The conversation should have gone something like this (especially if you're an asshole like me):

Officer swaggers up: Do you know how fast you were going?
Me, calmly: Yes.
Officer replies: How fast were you going, then?
Me, still calmly: Do you really expect me to answer that question?
Officer: Yes, I do.
Me: Heh, too bad. And I should note now that I will be contesting any ticket you write. I will not answer any further questions.

What grounds would there be to contest it? If the speed limit was 70 and you were exceeding that and you told him that you were exceeding that isn't the exact mph over just a moot point? When I got my ticket last fall for about 13 miles over it was also about $140. :( I haven't sped over that bridge since though.

Admitting the speed only tends to work on the local podunk cops who tend to give you a warning. State Troopers are always out to get you, man.
