Memorial Day

My father served in the special forces of the Army, something he describes as "the best job he ever had." Several of my uncles served. My grandparents served. Numerous other members of family and friends have served. Countless strangers have served through the generations. I was lucky, as all of my family made it home... but many families had those who did not make it home.

Some gave all they had and fell. To them we are thankful and today we remember not just their ultimate sacrifice of life but the sacrifice of the happiness of their friends, family and loved ones.

To those whom we have lost, to those whom we are losing today, to those whom we will doubtless lose in the line of service in the future... thank you. You are not forgotten, nor will you ever be.

Memorial Day has actually taken on a lot more meaning for me since my brother's deployment in Iraq. Up until then I hadn't known anyone personally that had served in a combat zone. It changes you in a way, after you know what it's like to have to wait for them to come home.
