I am so pissed at myself. Two years ago, I was a much different person in terms of fiscal responsibility. I paid several bills late, mostly because I was so frazzled I couldn't think straight. But excuses don't matter, the only thing that matters is that paid them late. And in so doing, I shot my credit rating in the foot.

With a hollow tipped round.

Fired from a bazooka.

At point blank range.

Now I have this crazy idea in my head I should buy a house. But my credit rating.... oh, that poor, poor credit rating. I fear it will be my downfall.

Stupid, foolish individual.

Book to consider

Nolo Press has a good section, including a good book, on credit repair. No ridiculous promises, but it can arm you with the knowledge of all of your rights:

Unless by "late" you mean "90 or more days, followed by collections agency notices", I doubt they're even on your credit report. I have occasionally made late payments to creditors and the only time it was a problem was when I was stupid enough to let a couple hundred dollar balance in my college days become delinquent (which on that account was defined as 60 days). It was reported to Experian and it didn't affect my ability to get a mortgage; by that point it was over three years old anyway, and it was a minor delinquency.
