According to this article at CNN, Argenbright Security has been kicked to the curb. Argenbright employs about 40% of the airport security and service personnel in America's airports. I know for a fact thanks to my frequent run-ins with them during work-related travel that these guys handled security at Chicago -- and sucked more than a black hole. I feel sorry that it's going to lead to major layoffs by the company, but the way the employees stationed at O'hare acted I am starting to think that, well, they deserve it. Poetic justice and all that.

Let this be a lesson to whoever gets the mantle of "security provider" handled to them: treating travellers like shit and being completely lax in security leads to eventual removal and, I bet, the end of your company in the industry. You better look sharp.

Didn't Argenbright have the contract at Logan last year, about early to mid-September?

O'Hare wasn't that bad when I flew out of there in early June after visiting the U of C....instead of some peach-fuzzed National Guard kid with an (unloaded) M-16, the gate was watched by an observant 50-something Chicago Police sergeant. That's what cops are paid for, to be observant and react if something looks fishy...

Airport security's philosophy is to inconvenience particular people to give the impression of good security, when the people being given extensive searches are likely people using Hotwire/Priceline because of 1.) funerals or 2.) impulsive vacations. 4 out of 5 people who were given the pat-down and bag search at the gate when Brendan went to his grandmother's funerals were also attending funerals.

When I went back to Pittsburgh for *my* grandmother's funeral, among the people searched were a 70-something granny and a Northwest pilot in uniform. And even though they searched me and my carry-on, they didn't ask one question about my trip.
