Good: A link I suggested has been posted to Boing Boing. If you're like me and frequently find yourself on the verge of a psychotic break while trying to fold fitted sheets for storage in the linen closet, I suggest you give it a look. I'm making civilized life better for all of us. Go me.

Bad: My white cotton socks get dirty. This is a normal thing that occurs during day-to-day sock operation (note: if you wear white socks all day long and they do not get dirty, I can only surmise you're an alien with technology far in advance of our own and I desperately want to join your society on Buugan-Selta-Three as an emissary of my people). What's abnormal -- and bad -- is that they never come clean no matter how many times I wash them. I'm not completely compulsive about having my whites their whitest, but it still irks me when the bottom of my socks are grey-brown even after being laundered. When I take a pair out of the drawer and find that funky ground-in dirt I feel like I'm scavenging socks from the bedroom floor rather than putting on a clean pair like all the rest of us upright-walking apes. These socks... they vex me with their dirtiness. I've washed them with regular detergent. I've washed them with bleach. I've washed them with detergent and bleach. I've watched them with detergent and bleach and OxiClean but still they do not come out remotely whiter on the bottom!

Different: I put up a curio shelf today, then I put a scented candle on it. I believe this is 65% "domestic" behavior.

And as a special Friday bonus, I give you an additional "D" for no added charge!

Disturbing: Buying 5.1 speakers for my PC and then testing them by experiencing the Ravenholm chapter of Half-Life2 in surround.

Good: The DirecTV system was installed yesterday and things went smoothly. I'm loving it -- the TiVo kicks ass and the quality of the signal is much better than what I had with Comcast. I'm sure I'll find something to gripe about soon enough.

Bad: I have the TiVo, and Ra apparently has a UTI. Again. If he goes to the vet, my trip to Man Day II will be at risk. What the hell is it with this cat's health and my attempts at having fun?

Disturbing: Subway sandwiches after they've sat in the fridge for 29 hours.

Good: I got to do some freeform roleplay today, and I actually held up my end of it! I really enjoyed the chance to get out and give this new character a test-drive. More of his background has revealed itself to me, so I'll probably be scribbling bits and pieces of it down on notepaper for the next two days.
Bad: It was ten dollars to get a replacement access badge from our HR department. Ten dollars for a simple proximity badge? It's a ten-year-old piece of technology from Honeywell! Come on, this is extortion!
Disturbing: The new picture for my badge is worse than my old one. Now I look like I'm asleep, with a gigantic head and have some sort of degenerative skin disease that turns my face a sallow color of yellow.

The water was rising so damn fast we thought it'd drown us all

Good: Last week on Tuesday when I called the number AT&T promised me for the house I received an error message saying the phone number was "disconnected or no longer in service." When I called it at noon this Saturday I got a message saying "This phone number is not yet in service," which told me that I was in the local switch. When I called it this morning it rang seven times, then went to voicemail! AT&T said they would have it connected on the 20th, and boy, they weren't kidding. Idly I find myself wondering if it actually went live at midnight...

Bad: My back hurts a great deal this morning. That behemoth microwave is to blame, I just know it! The emitter horn probably weighs half as much as I do. Not only is it heavy, but it's awkward with most of the weight listing to one side. That just makes it much more likely you'll pull a muscle trying to move the stupid thing, and undoubtedly that's what happened to me.

Disturbing: I got into the office this morning at 0705. When I made my way to my cube I noticed my manager's office was open and he was at his desk, typing away on that laptop of his.... and whistling. There should be a law against being that cheerful at 7:05 in the morning on a workday.

Little ditty

... as summarized by g/b/d:

Good: I completed construction of the headboard for my new queen-sized bed tonight, and my final product looks just like the picture!
Bad: Leaking bypass valves on water conditioners that weren't leaking when you did final walk-through just before closing.
Disturbing: My security system talks.

Tomorrow morning I get to sleep in for an extra half hour or so, then its down to Addison for class. I suspect we'll have a quiz first thing... What a way to start the day; a quiz, then 4 hours of lecture and 2 hours of lab. Oh well, I can't complain too much... After this Saturday it will be 2 down and 6 to go, roughly 1/4 of the way through the course and that much closer to finally having my degree. Perhaps the best of all this is that I'm not paying one red cent for my education outside of books and gas.
