feren: I AM THE MAN (ashryn-gruntle)
I discovered late last night that I should have worn my favorite cap all day -- even if was so hot that I was sweating buckets while we were moving things from the flat to the trailer. Like an idiot I didn't wear the hat and the wrath of the sun has inevitably been dealt: I have, once again, burned my scalp. It's not quite the color of a cooked lobster but it is along those lines.

Sometimes being bald is a pain... literally.

For the rest of the week I'll be rubbing my head down with aloe vera spray and trying not to put my head under the water when I take a shower.

We've sealed and locked the doors

We got started at 11:30 this morning and had the trailer fully loaded by about 3:00 PM. I'm especially impressed because those three hours were interspersed with several stops for food, cigarettes, soda, etc. I'd say we put in about 2 hours of honest work. With the amazing help of [livejournal.com profile] roho, [livejournal.com profile] genet, our friends H.K. and G.K. we not only loaded out the bed, recliner, steamer chest and other heavy items but about seven extra boxes of stuff that were packed "on the fly." The World's Smallest Flat is now, at this point, about the World's Smallest & Emptiest Flat. All that remains are some kitchen items that will be boxed up tomorrow, a fan, a window-mount air conditioner (debating on leaving that for the landlady, I have no use for it at Z'ha'dum) and various other "small, loose" items. And the cats. I'd be remiss if I didn't mention that Diva and Jazz are still here.

Alas, by the time we were done unpacking the trailer and drinking our beer it was time for Roho and Genet to head to Addison to catch up with [livejournal.com profile] chebutykin and her crew for dinner and drinky-delights at Dave & Busters. Curmudgeon's ankle was bothering her and I had to return the trailer I'd rented, so we had to pass. Total bummer, but I vow we will make up for it!

Tonight [livejournal.com profile] lady_curmudgeon and I are camping out in the bedroom using a mattress roll and a sleeping bag I brought back from the house. There's no TV and no computer (just my laptop from work). Rugged!

But cats down under the stars tonight

... and then I pick up the trailer from U-haul -- that is, I will pick it up if they haven't screwed me over by renting it to somebody else like they did the last time, when I danced this dance for [livejournal.com profile] duncandahusky. At eleven o'clock, our friends will show up (my friends H.K. & G.K. as well as [livejournal.com profile] roho and [livejournal.com profile] genet). Once everyone has gathered the moving of [livejournal.com profile] lady_curmudgeon from Kenosha to Z'ha'dum commences in earnest despite having been ongoing for the last four months...

The 'mudgeon and I worked through most of today, though there was some downtime after a late lunch. The Expedition was loaded up to the roof and we drove down to Z'ha'dum. Once it was unloaded we drove back to Kenosha. We're down to a few boxes, some furniture and miscellaneous items. Once everyone gets here I think this is going to go pretty quickly. I just hope that the heat stays within something approaching "tolerable" while we work.

Got up early, went to a U-Haul where a reservation was holding a 6x12 enclosed trailer for me so [livejournal.com profile] lady_curmudgeon and I could help [livejournal.com profile] takaza and [livejournal.com profile] duncandahusky move their bed and various other belongings from Chicago to the new digs in the 'burbs. Got there at 0703 and was told the trailer was indeed reserved for me... which was too bad, because the wiring on it was shot and it wasn't road-legal/safe. Looking at this thing I could see why that might be... the trailer looked like it might have been made when U-Haul was first founded. The gal at the counter said another trailer was due back, but I was quickly disabused of any hope that I could rent it when the manager came out and told me that she'd misread the computer and while the trailer was due back that morning it had a reservation on it for somebody else.

Defeated, I returned to Curmudgeon's place and attempted some major black magic to find a replacement. As trailers are generally not an "impulse rent" item that are stocked I met with little luck -- most places were still closed at that hour of the morning and of the places I could get an answer at there were none to be had. I performed more black magic and got ahold of an incredibly helpful traffic manager at U-Haul, who somehow found and secure for me a 6x12 trailer at a storage place in Antioch. The day was saved! We arrived at the storage place (which I was familiar with, as it was just North of [livejournal.com profile] roho and [livejournal.com profile] genet's house) and got all the paperwork taken care of by around 0930. Then it was time to hook up the trailer... and that's when I did something incredibly stupid.
