Sorry, gang, but I have only one thing to say:

Quoting a website's propoganda does not make it fact.

Or perhaps [livejournal.com profile] yotogi, the Watcher, the reaver of fucking LiveJournal souls said it best when he said

"And let us not forget that the Weight Watchers website is undeniably the place to go to receive information on competing weight loss schema that is utterly unblemished by partiality. Right. And a five-foot-tall chocolate Atkins shake might fly, singing the praises of Bob Almighty on High while playing the BANJO, out of my narrow, white virgin ASS!"

Methinks somebody is just jealous of the repeated success stories on [livejournal.com profile] anthroatkins.

For starters, congrats on the diet thing. Welcome to the club!

[Right now I'd be satisfied with either the Atkins or non-Atkins way.]

Every person is an individual, and each diet has its pros and its cons. There is no one-size-fits-all plan for lifetime weight and fitness. To believe otherwise is to fall for society's "quick fix" mentality and truly give up any vestige of independent thought. What's ultimately important is that you find a plan that works for you.

[I started the diet route this week, orginally was going with Atkins but promised a friend who hates the method I'd do the "better food and excercise" method of conting calories first.]

"Better" is relative when it comes to foods, again because of the individuality aspect. Experimenting is key to finding what works best for you, but I assume you mean "better" in the sense of "less Burger King onion rings," right? ;) It's hard to go wrong with that. Money in your pocket and less liquid gold in your veins.

What does worry me about your diet is why you're making promises to other people about your health based on their likes and dislikes? They're not doing the diet for you, you are doing the diet. I think you'd feel a lot better if you made your own choices, because you're the one who has to live with them, not your friend.

That being said the "better food and exercise" regimen is a completely legitimate methodology for weight management, and I heartily approve of it. I think that too few people are willing to follow that path because it represents "more work" than they're willing to do (remember that we're the society that invented weight-loss pills because we're too lazy to get up from the couch to walk around the block). Any plan that claims weight loss without exercise is a farce and should be avoided at all costs.

What I don't approve of is the pressuring you received.

Anyway, gospel aside: good luck on the new eating plan, and I hope that all goes well! The first weeks are always the hardest.
