More frustrating yet is my family is actively discouraging my use of leave from work to fly to Texas for the service.

Ugh. My mom died less than two weeks after her cancer was diagnosed, but she knew she was in trouble months before that (not that being quicker to see a doctor would have changed the prognosis; the common form of pancreatic cancer is essentially untreatable.) I recall commenting to Holly, a few months earlier, how old she was suddenly looking. I assume your aunt must have had some idea something bad was happening.
