Nobody should be in a supermarket when they find out their aunt has passed of cancer that went undiagnosed until two days previous -- this especially should not happen to a cancer survivor.

More frustrating yet is my family is actively discouraging my use of leave from work to fly to Texas for the service.

It's such a fine line

My thoughts are with you

I cannot speak to what kind of relationship you have with the rest of your family, but when my Grandfather on my dad's side passed, I did call the folks and see if they wanted to come home. They too told me that I didn't have to.

I think that came from a number of different places. I think there was a desire for normalcy, a desire for things to continue on at some sort of regular pace. My grandfather was old-old, and his passing was not unexpected, nor on some levels unwelcome.

I guess all I am trying to say is that if your relationship with your family is otherwise good, then you could probably chock their behavior up to the fact that no one really has a handle yet, even after all these thousands of years, on death. If you want to go, and would feel welcomed once you got there, I would go.
