Our 14 year old kitty, Jazz, is sick. [livejournal.com profile] lady_curmudgeon got a voicemail from the vet today after yesterday's visit to the cat clinic. She sums up pretty much everything in her post over here. The short story is that Jazz's blood work, paired with her symptoms, indicates she has a severe kidney disease. I don't know what the blood workup says as I haven't seen it yet, but she's shown increased drinking, increased urination and loss of body weight (She's lost 4 pounds, over 30% of her body weight, in the last few months).

She's so damn sweet and fun. This is scary. I don't want to lose her yet.

All thoughts greatly appreciated.

Aww, hope a change of diet can help, as long as kitty is still eating and drinking. Tank was near that age and sadly there wasn't much that could be done, he was the sweetest of the big guys too.

Having had more than one cat, and having lost one, I know how you feel. Modern medicine can do much, and I hope that the vets can make her feel better stretch the years you have with her.

When the time comes as it will inevitably, Please remember my thoughts about this; the love we can feel for New Cats, rescued from a pound or one that has simply wandered into our lives especially, is an incredible gift given to us by those old cats who have loved us and passed on. If I hadn't had Puma my life, I would have never discovered the cat-shaped space in my heart, and I wouldn't have adopted Clyde and discovered who he is. When the time comes, I wll adopt another cat, in joy and in celebrtion of Clyde.

These creatures gift us.

I appreciate the spirit and intent of your message, my friend, and it's well-heard. But right now isn't the time. We've only just gotten the basic news, we haven't explored the treatment protocol or how severe the damage may be.

She's still got a lot of life in her. We'll work with the vet to do what we can to give her many more years of happiness.

As you can imagine, I sympathize. There's nothing wrong with hoping for the best; it may be a battle you can fight. But it's also not a bad idea to at least prepare for the worst. I hope tomorrow brings you better news.

Poor kitty! It's scary when they're sick. They can't tell you when they feel better or worse.
