Remember that rock that hit the windshield of my pickup on Sunday night? The one that left a star bigger than a nickel? Well, its work wasn't done there -- it caused more damage than I thought. On the drive in to work this morning I noticed a four inch long crack in the windshield, just above the driver's side windshield wiper. Worse yet, it was bigger when I pulled into the office parking lot.

Christ on a semi-automatic crutch.

I can still remember how that music used to make me smile

Fuck

That happened to me on OldSaab. Big rock from a truck hit my windshield, left a nice star. I thought that was the end of it for the time being.

Over the next couple days, I got to watch a horizontal crack slowly form across my windshield as I desparately tried to find a place that would sell me a new windshield for less than the standard 'you must be rich!' markup.

I know trucks are a vital part of the economy, and I know truckers don't have an easy job, and deserve more respect than they get...but sometimes, for all the miscellaneous shit they kick up/drop (rocks, huge plates of ice, cargo debris, once I was even behind one that blasted my finish with a steady mist of gritty sand), I wish the trucks themselves had their own roads.

Hey, it'd probably make them happier too...wouldn't have some some idiot driving a motorized rollerskate (of the Z3 variety, or similar) cutting them off with 6 inches to spare.

Stitch in time?

Is it too late to have the damage repaired by a windshield repair specialist? Such places -- some of them will drive out to wherever the vehicle is -- often can fix small "spiderweb" cracks, but usually only before they spread much.

Check your insurance... some insurance policies cover windshield replacement every so many miles.

Gravel trucks of doom

I have a gravel quarry near to where I live, and often I find myself stuck behind a gravel truck. Also, there's some kind of place near work that these trucks go to. I've yet to have my windshield damaged by a rock flying out of the top of one of these, but I'm wary of them anyway. Why don't they put tarps over the top of those things? :P

That's the really annoying part: this wasn't a gravel truck, this was just your average, every day 18 wheeler ... the normal over-the-road freight semi. If it was a gravel truck or a earth moving vehicle of some kind, I'd be a bit less annoyed (and yes, they are supposed to tarp their loads, yet oddly enough they never seem to do so even when the tarp is BUILT INTO THEIR TRAILER).

Grrr.
