feren: I AM THE MAN (livingston)

Those of you who have known me for a while know that I am a very keen fan of Stephen King and his various works. While browsing the Internet Movie Database this morning I found a neat little piece of news. It seems that Anthony Hopkins will be playing Ted Brautigan in a movie adaptation of Stephen King's compilation novel Hearts In Atlantis. I have to be rather amused at the tag line, "What if one of life's great mysteries moved in upstairs?"

To the best of my knowledge this is the first adaptation of a Stephen King novel that will come even remotely close to touching on the Gunslinger universe, and I'm eager to see how they handle this very complex story. Not to mention it's going to be weird to see the man who played Hannibal "The Cannibal" Lecter portraying a character that is almost 180 degrees around from that role.

I'd heard they were making Hearts in Atlantis, but not that Hopkins would be in it. That sounds downright interesting -- anybody with a range like that should be able to play Brautigan pretty well. Good voice for the part, too. I can't imagine they'll be able to get the whole book into it, though. (It was something like sixteen hours on tape; I listened to it not too long ago, the unabridged version.) Maybe they're only doing the first section?

Drama/fantasy, yeah. Except with definite chunks of horror (but I guess that's normal for King). Some of the Vietnam bits aren't exactly gentle. Not nearly enough Gunslinger, though-- must have Gunslinger movies. (Though... who in the world would they get to play Roland?)

My understanding is it's only touching on the short story at the beginning titled, Low Men In Yellow Coats, but I don't have confirmation on that yet.

There was a thread about this on alt.fan.stephen-king some 5 or 6 years back, it was kinda' neat :) I can't remember many of the candidates, but I think one of the ones that was popular was Clint Eastwood, for the gaunt, chiseled, unemotional look. But in his latest roles, I just can't picture it. Bleh :P

I have always seen Bruce Campbell as Roland [think Ash from Army of Darkness, or Brisco County Jr.] But I don't know if he can play the role seriously enough.

Bruce Campbell?

Chiseled good looks, but not world-weary... not worn enough.

I think the Dark Tower series is something best done as they're rumored to be doing with The Eyes Of The Dragon: animated. It'd really be the only way to pull it off decently.
