Then I'm told that at 9pm CDT tonight I have to go online, telecommute into work and reboot three firewalls and pray that they come back up.

So much for my uncluttered, uninterrupted weekend with my sweetie.

I am Not Pleased.

Rrf.

I can kind of relate to this one. At work, we've been offering a type of 24x7 emergency support by pager. After hours, the overnight automated attendant offers options for customers to directly call Dell, WorldCom, Genuity, as well as the emergency pager. If there is an emergency, they can choose that option and page the person on duty. That person is to respond and assist within a half hour no matter what the time, even if it's at 2AM.

This has been something we've been doing for some time on a volunteer basis. Now IBM comes in, says this is what our customer (Invensys) wants, and it's part of our job descriptions whether we like it or not. We do this. That does not go over well. What went over even less well is the fact that there is no more on-call pay for this, just one day of comp time for every seven days the person is recorded as carrying the bag. On-call pay is only made available to people who spend more that four hours in a sitting doing this function.

One of our employees decided that she flat out would not participate in this. She, like me, didn't participate in the January to April schedule because we felt it was an intrusion in our lives. Now that IBM is being a little more pushy about it, I've given in to some degree, because I could always use the days off, and the call volume is light. However, hats off to my partner, who is standing her ground. She won't lose her job over it for many reasons, but we now have two extra folks in the rotation, and the periods over which the bag is carried are now half-weeks instead of full weeks.

Yours truly has the bag for seven days starting today.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you that the systems reboot without incident so that you can spend as much time with Jen as possible.
